Ghana has officially launched its own music streaming platform, Ghana Music Experience (GMX), courtesy of His Excellency Vice President Alhaji Dr.
Mahamudu Bawumia. The historic launch took place on October 30, 2024, at the De Iconic Events Centre in East Legon.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized the significance of GMX, stating that it’s a momentous occasion for Ghana to have its own music streaming app. He also acknowledged the crucial role music plays in Ghanaian culture, bridging generations and uniting communities.
The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Hon. Egyapa Mercer, highlighted GMX’s potential to connect Ghanaian artists with global audiences, providing a spotlight for Ghanaian music and financial benefits for artists and industry professionals.
GMX is not just a music streaming platform; it’s also designed to celebrate Ghana’s rich musical heritage, diverse genres, and creative brilliance. The platform offers better compensation through royalties, visibility for emerging artists, and preservation of indigenous traditional sounds.
With its innovative approach to tracking and distributing royalties, GMX has the potential to serve as a blueprint for cultural preservation and monetization of content across Africa. This aligns perfectly with the government’s commitment to advancing the creative arts industry and integrating technology into cultural promotion strategies.
Platforms like GMX will enable Ghana to showcase its music, talents, and culture to a global audience, contributing significantly to tourism and creating new revenue streams for the creative economy.
