The chiefs and people of Elmina gathered today to mark the annual festival, which dates back to 1847. The festival honors the community’s history, culture, and ancestors.
The Paramount Chief and sub-chiefs offered sacred festival food to Nana Brenya, the river god, at the Brenya Lagoon. The chief priest cast his net three times into the lagoon, symbolizing the beginning of the fishing season.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo graced the occasion as the special guest of honor, highlighting the government’s support for Ghana’s cultural heritage.
“The Bakatue Festival is a cherished tradition that brings us together as a people. We are grateful for our heritage and our ancestors, and we look forward to a bountiful fishing season,” said the Paramount Chief.
“I commend the people of Elmina for keeping their traditions alive. Our cultural heritage is a vital part of our nation’s identity, and we will continue to support and promote it,” said President Akufo-Addo.
